How to Make a Keto Cheesesteak Casserole
Gather a handful of basic ingredients, and you’re halfway to making a 5 ingredient ground beef casserole in 30 minutes or less!
Ingredients
Ground beef – Ground hamburger meat makes this dish cheap and affordable, plus tasty enough the whole family will enjoy!
Onion – The original Philly cheesesteak recipe combines steak, onions, and cheese, so we wouldn’t be authentic if we left it out. (1, 2) The sweet and soft onion makes every bite delicious!
Bell pepper – I prefer green bell peppers in Philly cheesesteak recipe spin-offs. However, you can also cook with red or yellow peppers, or mix them all together.
Cream cheese – We make this keto Philly cheesesteak casserole with cream cheese because it gives incredible mouthfeel and flavor. Adding a creamy coating to all the ingredients also helps keep them soft and succulent while baking.
Provolone cheese – Another signature feature of Philly cheesecake casserole is the cheesy topping. You’d be missing out if you skipped it entirely, but you can make a substitution with mozzarella, Swiss, or white American cheese.
Step-By-Step Directions
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
Brown the ground beef in a skillet over medium-high heat for about 5 minutes, breaking apart clumps with a spatula as it cooks.
Reduce heat to medium and add bell pepper and onion to the pan. Season with salt and pepper. Continue sautéing for another 5-7 minutes until the vegetables are soft.
Add the cream cheese to the pan. Mix well to coat all the ingredients before transferring the meat and vegetable mixture to an 8×8-inch baking dish.
Arrange Provolone cheese in a single layer, overlapping each edge slightly with another piece of cheese. Bake for 10-15 minutes until cheese melts and turns golden brown on top.
Remove from the oven and let cool for 5-10 minutes before serving warm.
What to Serve with Philly Cheesesteak Casserole
This meal in 30 minutes is extraordinarily versatile when it comes to serving with side dishes. Since it’s meat and cheese heavy, just about any vegetable side dish will complement the savory casserole nicely.
Consider steamed green beans, coleslaw, coconut creamed greens, or a simple side salad with one of your favorite keto salad dressings.

I love how this recipe uses provolone cheese! I always think of cheesesteak as a type of cheese-less sandwich, but it tastes so much better with the provolone!
That provolone flavor just sets off this recipe, thanks for the comments Jane.
This recipe was delicious and toddler/picky husband approved. We will definitely make this again.

This casserole maintains is moisture well and reminds me of the philly cheesesteaks I enjoyed growing up– but with quality ingredients. Definitely will be making it again.

Even though I’m not on a keto diet, sometimes the bread in a Philly CS is just too much at dinner time. This is a great idea instead!
I agree, this is a great gluten-free alternative!
